Q: What is anointing?
A: Anointing is the “sacramental use of oil as an outward sign of God’s active presence for healing, initiation, or ordination. Anointing with oil by smearing or pouring may accompany prayers for healing (unction) and the laying on of hands in the rite for Ministration to the Sick (BCP, p. 453)” (Source). A Dictionary for Episcopalians says: “traditionally signifying the gift of the Holy Spirit, anointing is also used in rites where an individual is set apart for special reasons, such an ordination.”
Beginning on September 1, on first Sundays this fall St. Francis’ will offer a Service of Healing and Anointing following the 10:30am. Stay for this 10-minute service to be prayed for or to pray for others.
